Durability
James Hardie fiber cement resists fire, rot, and insect damage, and holds up exceptionally well against Kentucky’s humidity and freeze-thaw cycles. LP SmartSide is engineered wood treated for moisture and insect resistance — durable, but generally not quite as long-lived as fiber cement.
Appearance
Both come in a range of profiles — clapboard, board & batten, shingle & shake — with authentic wood-grain textures. Hardie holds paint exceptionally well over time; SmartSide offers a slightly warmer, more traditional wood look out of the box.
Installation & Weight
SmartSide is lighter and easier to cut on-site, which can mean a faster install on some homes. Hardie is denser and heavier, requiring specific tools and installer training — which our crews are certified for.
Cost
LP SmartSide is typically the more budget-friendly option upfront. James Hardie carries a higher material cost but often pays off in longevity and resale value.
